This is funny...

There a site http://www.votecanada.org/
where you can vote on whether you approve of specific bills going through Parliament. Now, one of these bills is Bill C-1, and on this page http://www.votecanada.org/c-1-prime-minister.html
you can vote "yes", "no", or "undecided" about this bill, and there's a link to contact your MP about it.

The funny part is that (perhaps unknown to the creator of the site), Bill C-1 "An Act respecting the administration of oaths of office" is a pro forma bill that is read after every Speech from the Throne. It is never passed, and never even gets second reading. It's just a ritual that has been performed, for five hundred years or more, to assert the right of Parliament to debate anything it wants to before discussing the Speech from the Throne, thus asserting their independence.

the side opposite of funny then

yeah, just pointless PR.  A way for CDN's to feel engage in what's otherwise an oligarchic bureaucracy gone wild.

of course, would we want people to be able to "vote" online.  In King County in Seattle *all* voting (at the State level even I believe) is online or through the mail.  There is no in-person voting.  They champion the mail-in option.  I have no idea of the issues involved.  But gone are the days when the flunky MLA could be near the polling officer at the Sackville legion where you went to vote to give that little bit more of pressure.

Online voting sounds like the perfect way to facilitate fraud. Also, knee-jerk reactions to media reports. I hope we keep the paper ballot system. The presence of scrutineers and all of the other checks and balances make it feel far more reliable than these crooked or defective voting machines. Also, it weeds out those too apathetic to go to the poll.
