because once you embarass the CN's government, you've pretty much had your decision made for you

Good for Goog, I must say.

Google has thrown down the gauntlet to China by saying it is no longer willing to censor search results on its Chinese service.

The world's leading search engine said the decision followed a cyber-attack that it believes was aimed at gathering information on Chinese human rights activists. It also cited a clampdown on the internet in China over the past year. Its statement raised the prospect of closing Google.cn and potentially its offices in China.

Interesting timing, what with the recent successful lawsuit against Google in China for illegally copying writers' works.

yeah, but I don't believe them leaving is sour grapes over Baidu.  It's about the hacking.  They can't have the CN govt stealing their IP, or more cynically, stealing their customer's content leaving the company open to lawsuit.  I think it's worthy of them to give CN the finger, which make no mistake, they have done.  By implying the CN govt was involved in anyway, and to openly threaten to leave over censorship, which the govt refuses to admit, they have already decided to give up.  Good for them, IMO.  Less gold and viagra spam.

the update from Goobrother: your authoritarian tactics conflict with our plans for world leadership

all search and stuff is now open and coming from Hong Kong.  Democratic filtering principles are expected soon to be enacted the CN government.  So that will be about that.

Yeah they are quickly turning into one hand of the country doesn't know what the other hand is doing.  Purely capitalist, purely authoritarian, somewhere's weirdly in the middle.  So "weird" may become the new paradigm for that State.
